TAMIL PODHIGAI TV CHANNEL TRP RATE SECOND

Tamil Nadu state owned Podhigai channel continues to be the second most watched channel across the state next only to Sun TV, according to Television Rating (DART) survey. According to TAM survey, Podhigai, which used to have 0.9 to 1 TRP for its news bulletin in Tamil two years ago enjoys 3.46 TRP in small cities with a population up to 10 lakh. The popularity of the news bulletin maybe due to its 'no strings attached' tag when all other Tamil channels sport a 'political' colour.

While commercials go to Sun TV, which has the maximum reach in the urban sector (82.1 per cent TV homes), advertisers don't prefer Podhigai. Dr Vethamany Senapathi, Doordarshan Kendra, Chennai, says, "Our revenue target for the fiscal year 2008-09 is Rs.10 crore'.

Podhigai became the first Tamil channel to telecast the Tamil version of Richard Attenborough's Gandhi on August 15 this year. The regional channel of DD also telecasts live temple festivals including Karthigai Deepam of Tiruvannamali, Brammohtsavam in Tirupati and Magarajyoti festival in Sabarimala Ayyappan temple.

Another interesting finding of DART survey is that Kalaignar TV has become the third most watched channel in the state within a year of its launch (it was launched in September 2007). While Jaya TV is the sixth most popular channel, Vijay TV ranks fifth, Sun News twelfth and Makkal TV thirteenth.

Star-casts: Bharath, Poonam Bajwa, Simran, Sampath, Krishna, Vadivelu, Rajesh and many others.

Music: G.V. Prakash

Cinematography: Priyan

Stunts: Rocky Rajesh

PRO: P.T. Selva Kumar

One-line: Hero saving heroine from the clutches of villain.

(By N.Thyagarajan)

Bharath has improved a lot in his performance in this film because of his character that he adores in Seval. It is not a disappointment for anyone, because, Bharath is given the highest role in this film, that ever played in his previous films.Director Hari have focused much on Bharath's Tirunelveli language slang. Poonam Bajwa makes a good start and she is sure to be liked by everyone. Simran's re-entry is commendable.

Vadivelu, performances well, but the acting of his have become stale one and he could not compensate the viewers with newer techniques in his comedy. All the songs tuned by G.V. Prakash are worthy listening. V.T. Vijayan brim up with good works on his editing.

Hari has not letdown our hopes with his story and screenplay…

On the whole, Seval is a film, to be seen with family members.
Production: M.A. Jinnah Creations

Star-casts: Bharath, Poonam Bajwa, Simran, Sampath, Krishna, Vadivelu, Rajesh and many others.

One-line: Hero saving heroine from the clutches of villain.

Bharath, a carefree guy is the son of a high-time flower vendor in the village. His uncle's son Vadivelu works as a postman over there in the same village. Roaming together without any goals in their lives, Bharath falls in love at first sight with Poonam Bajwa. She is none other than daughter Poor Temple Priest Y.Gee Mahendran and Simran is the elder daughter. Well-pampered by her elder sister, both of them share good rapport.

Simran is married to Prem by her father and things go on smooth until she dies with cancer attack after delivery. Much before that she gets her sister Poonam Bajwa married to Prem. Within next few months, Prem dies off in an accident and meanwhile one of her close relatives has an evil eye of seducing her. Bharath who was pushed behind bars due to some civil problems is shocked to know what had happened. He immediately rushes to rescue Poonam and meets her. Some of the close relatives spot both Poonam and Bharath together assume things out of mistake. As a consequence out of it, Poonam's head is shaved and assault her… Frustrated Bharath kills down all the baddies and gets into jail.

Bharath has improved a lot in his performance in this film because of his character that he adores in Seval. It is not a mere disappointment from him. He isn't able to utter Tamil in the slang of Tirunalveli and Director Hari should have focused a bit on this. Poonam Bajwa makes a good start and her face is sure to be liked by everyone. Simran's re-entry is commendable for she does justice to her role. Looks like she would be the best contender for Nadhiya on supporting roles in future…

Vadivelu dominates almost throughout the entire show with rib-trickling comedy tracks. None of the songs tuned by G.V. Prakash are worthy listening. Nor does V.T. Vijayan brim up with good works and his editing looks amateurish.

Hari letdowns our hopes with his irksome story and dragging screenplay…

On the whole, Seval is not worthy watching for any centres…

Rahman will host the 'The Big Band' show where bands from seven countries- India, Nepal, Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Singapore and Sri Lanka- will vie for a three-year recording contract with Phat Phish Records, an entertainment and communications company.

The winner will also get artist management up to three albums and six music videos, tours and concerts on national and international stage as well as cash prize worth Rs 10 million.

"We have seen so many reality shows on the television. But what makes it different is that the show is not all about India alone, we have the idea of providing a common platform for all these guys from various places," Rahman said here on Tuesday.

"There is a huge audience of people who look beyond the typical Bollywood music. Music talents cutting across regions, languages, genres will be performing on the show. Considering the excellent reach of Doordarshan, we will launch the show soon on Doordarshan," said Phat Phish chairman Anand Surapur.

"We think the timing is right for people to be exposed to a wider choice. There is an unbelievable amount of talent available and it is just a matter of bringing it out, nurturing it and presenting it to be recognised," Managing Director, Phat Phish, K R Harish said.

Participating bands must have between 2-10 members with at least one lead singer and must submit three tunes with the first tune being an original interpretation of a popular Bollywood, folk or regional piece.

The second tune has to be based on the bands' interpretation of Rahman's specially composed melody for the show which will be released on October 24. Besides, the bands will also have to submit one of their original compositions.

"My role is to be the little link between these bands and the people. The show's concept is something unique but it has to be linked with the public," said the ace music director.

Asked on his expectations from the show, Rahman said, "Its all about discovering something new from these bands. We will be looking for various elements. One element from one band, another element from another... I think there will be lot of surprises in the show as there are so many bands."

Short listed bands will be invited to the first stage of audition where they will be asked to perform any of the three pieces by the judges.

KARUNANIDHI REPLIES TO SUN TV PRODUCERS

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today said district Collectors and Police officials were directed to take action against those trying to stop screening of the Sun Pictures’ Kadhalil Vizhunden in Madurai and its surrounding areas.
Reacting to Marans charge, Karunanidhi, replying to a set of questions, denied that neither theatre owners nor the distributors of Ramanathapuram and Madurai were threatened.
"If Sun Pictures has any proof or evidence to show that the theatre owners were threatened, it should hand it over to authorities concerned for taking swift action" he said.
"Instead of just faxing a complaint to Home Secretary and saying that no action had been taken, Sun Pictures should file a direct complaint with Police and the Collector and submit the necessary evidence to substantiate their charge",he said.
Alleging that Sun Pictures was trying to gain political mileage and to win the sympathy from the film world, he said "their charge that the government was not taking any action against the complaint is aimed at not solving the issue".
He said no complaint was received from theatre owners and film distributors in Madurai that they were threatened. They also didn't seek police protection.” Even if a complaint is lodged now, government will not remain a mute spectator','he said Sun Pictures had criticized the clarification issued by the government. The government stopped with just issuing a statement saying nobody had the right to stop the release of a movie, it said in a release yesterday.
On Sun Pictures contention that the government had not given a firm commitment to theatre owners on providing security to screen the film, Karunanidhi said the government had clarified yesterday that any film which was certified and cleared by the Censor Board has the right to be released. "This itself conveys the message that government officials would extend all their support in screening the film" he said.
The Chief Minister also hit out at some political parties who raised their voice in support of Sun Pictures after maintaining silence when Sun TV "failed" to cooperate with the government in sharing its feed to Arasu Cable TV Corporation which is launched by the State Government.
"As per the rules all the satellite TV Channels should extend support to the Arasu Cable TV Corporation. But the government's appeal in this regard was ignored by some private satellite TV Channels" he said.
Following reports of stalling of the movie's release in Madurai allegedly by DMK activists yesterday, the government had said nobody had the right to stop a movie's release, after it had satisfied required legal mandates such as obtaining (Censor Board) certification.
Some media reports had said that the movie was not released in Madurai, a stronghold of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's son M K Azhagiri, due to alleged threats from DMK men who warned the theatres against screening the movie.

MARAN’S FILM RELEASED IN AZHAGIRI’S STRONG HOLD

The maiden venture of Sun Group’s new arm Sun Pictures, Kathalil Vizhunden (falling in love), has finally been released in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, after a delay that once seemed indefinite due to pressure from M K Azhagiri, son of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
The romantic flick, according to the producers, was ‘banned’ from being released in Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Dindigul, Theni and Sivaganga districts. It is said that the rivalry between Azhagiri and the Maran brothers - Kalanidhi and Dayanidhi - who head the Sun Group.
Theatre owners had abandoned their plans of releasing the film last Friday after being allegedly threatened by DMK cadres. The exhibitors claimed that they did not want to be caught in between the two warring groups.
Sun Pictures had faxed a letter to the Home Secretary requesting police protection for theatres screening the movie. The group also telecast clippings through its Sun TV and Sun News channels and published reports in its Dinakaran and Tamil Murasu, explaining the difficulties faced in releasing the movie in Madurai and other southern districts where Azhagiri is said to reign supreme

RELATIONS SOUR BETWEEN MARAN AND DMK

CHENNAI: The tussle between the Maran brothers and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi worsened further on Saturday.
The provocation this time was the alleged prevention of screening of Maran brothers-owned Sun Pictures’ movie Kathalil Vizhunthen in the southern districts on Friday.
Most theatre owners in these districts were reportedly warned by DMK men not to screen the movie on the opening day on Friday.

Incidentally, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s Madurai-based son and DMK strongman M K Azhagiri calls the shots in the southern districts.

The war of words between the two families began on Saturday with Karunanidhi making an oblique reference to Sun Pictures’ movie at a film function in the city by saying that he had never obstructed the release of films, even those which expressed views opposing him.

In its news bulletin on Friday, Sun TV narrated the difficulties faced by Sun Pictures in releasing Kathalil Vizhunthen, while Tamil Murasu and Dinakaran, the Tamil dailies owned by Maran brothers, gave wide coverage, accusing the DMK Government of playing spoilsport in the issue.
Sun Network also lodged a complaint with the Home Secretary on Friday, stating that supporters of Azhagiri were intimidating theatre owners against screening the movie.
The State Government reacted on Saturday by issuing a statement denying the allegation of Sun Pictures that the release of their film was stalled in Madurai.

The statement said distributors and theatre owners had the right to screen any movie which fulfilled Censor Board certification norms.
“Some persons were leveling unnecessary charges out of selfish motives,” it added.
Within a few hours, Sun Network fired their salvo charging the government with distancing itself from the whole issue.
“Allowing persons to obstruct films produced by those who had fallen out of their (DMK first family’s) favour will only set a bad precedent,” Sun Network said.
Earlier, Azhagiri dashed off a legal notice to Sun Network stating that his image was tarnished by allegations levelled against him in the screening of Sun Pictures’ movie.

Zee Tamil gears for big-ticket launch; channel to go on air around Vijaya Dasami

BY, N. THYAGARAJAN

Zee Tamil is all set to hit the airwaves around Vijaya Dasami. Zee News Ltd, part of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL), is planning a big-ticket launch with a 45-day media campaign spanning the entire state.

The new channel will air 11 hours of original programming content and one and a half hour of news programme. To start with, Zee Tamil will have three soaps and two more would be added within 4-5 weeks of the launch. The channel, which is testing its signals now, is hopeful of being present in 90 per cent C&S households in Chennai. V Chandrasekaar Barathi, Business Head, Zee Tamil, said that the channel would be available on all major MSOs from day one. Apart from DishTV, the channel would be available on one or two more DTH platforms, he added.

Zee Tamil also plans to have a high-decibel marketing blitzkrieg involving print, cinema, radio and outdoor. The launch campaign will break on October 1 and would be spread across the state for 45 days. The channel would also organise musical nights in six cities preceding the launch, which would feature some popular singers and film stars.

DraftFCB Ulka is the creative agency on the account. Barathi agreed to the fact that the market was already crowded. He said, “There are no two ways about it. We are conscious about the fact that we are the 21st channel to enter the market. Our differentiation would be our narrative style, packaging and focus. Our strategy would be right placements, looking at audience preferences.”

Barathi further said that Tamil Nadu currently had 21 channels, of which 11 were GECs, “but we are talking about only two or three channels, so there is scope for more channels to come and make a difference”.

“When Kalaignar TV was launched, the overall time spent on television went up by 9 per cent. So, it is not that the existing time spend has been taken away, but there has been an increase in the time spent on the channels. Therefore, there is scope for more channels.” Barathi maintained.

KADHALIL VIZHUNDEN GETS 'UA'

BY, KARPAGAM THYAGARAJAN

Kalanithi Maran’s Sun Pictures maiden movie in Tamil Kadhalil Vizhunthen, after a protracted battle with the censors has been cleared with an ‘UA’ certificate. As per sources in the trade, the film is likely to release this Friday (Sep 26) worldwide.
The film has a new team Boys Nakul is turning hero along with Sunaina as the heroine, and the theme of debutant director P.V Prasad is said to be bold. According to the grapevine, the censors found the climax of the film to be “bloody and too violent”, so they have trimmed it and given it a ‘UA’ certificate.
Meanwhile Sun TV network has started the biggest ever promotional campaign of the film on their channels. Every commercial break on Sun Music has the Vijay Antony chartbuster Nakku Mukka… blaring out.
Television ad gurus feel that if actual rates of Sun TV’s spot buy rates were taken into account, Kalanithi Maran must have spent a fortune on the TV ad blitz of Kadhalil Vizhunthen.

The first mythological serial 'Ramayanam' was telecast on Doordarshan in 1986-87.
“Dubbing was not allowed then. 'Ramayanam' was then only in Hindi. The Tamil-dubbed version of 'Shri Krishna' was aired on DD Metro in 1993. It ran for 50 to 60 episodes. Due to viewers' demand, Shri Krishna was aired on DD 1 again,” recalls dialogue writer D Mohan Kumar, who translated the first daily soap on Doordarshan, 'Shanthi', into Tamil.

His father K Devanarayanan is a veteran dialogue writer. He translated 'Shri Krishna', 'Jai Mahalaxmi' (aired on DD in 1996-97) into Tamil. Devanarayanan also did Vikramathithyan Kathaigal on Jaya TV in 1999 and Kothaiyin Kathai on Goddess Andal in 1995-96 on Sun TV.

“Mythological stories are back as they are evergreen subjects. Every channel should take an initiative to air such mythologies. We have our own Shivapuranam, mythologies on Vinayagar and Murugan,” says Mohan Kumar.

Hansie Cronje film to be released in SA

A film on late South African cricket captain Hansie Cronje, whose alleged involvement in the 2000 match-fixing scandal, is to be released in South Africa this month on 24.

Produced by his brother Frans Cronje, 'Hansie' will be released in four cities initially and is also expected to have an international release later. Frans said though he did not have concrete distribution deals with anyone, he has heard of interests from India, Australia and even the US for the film.

The film is a chronicles of Cronje's fall from a widely-respected and admired cricket captain to a match-fixer.

He was banned for life after his confession in front of a commission of inquiry. It was while serving this ban, that Cronje died in a plane crash in June 2002.

"This is Hansie's story. It's about the fall of a hero and his struggle to rise above his mistakes to start anew," Frans said of the film, which is directed by renowned actor and filmmaker Regardt van den Bergh.

The film faced financial troubles right from the beginning and 'Hansie' productions in fact faced liquidation earlier this year.

JAI IS IN TROUBLE

Actor Jai (of Subramaniapuram fame) is in the news for a wrong reason. A complaint has been lodged against him by a debutant director Prabhu with the Tamil Film Producers Council that the actor was not cooperating to complete the film Adhae Neram Adhae Idam.

However, Jai has come out with an explanation. He said, ‘Prabhu could not complete the movie within the dates given by me. Unfortunately, I was unable to allocate more dates since I was busy with other projects.’

He also alleged that the director had narrated a story and shot a different version, which was not appealing to him and his co-star Vijayalakshmi.

Sun TV telecasts Jaya's diatribe against DMK

As opposition leader and AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa attacked the DMK regime on many fronts and accused chief minister M Karunanidhi of working for the welfare of his own family rather than the people, a television channel run by Karunanidhi's estranged grand-nephews gleefully telecast her diatribe live.

'Sun News', a 24-hour news channel from the Sun group owned by Kalanidhi Maran and his brother Dayanidhi Maran, had live footage of most of her strident speech – something unthinkable when they were in the good books of the DMK leadership. Sun TV, which commands the highest popularity rating in the Tamil speaking world, had played a significant role in anti-Jayalalithaa propaganda over a decade.

However, after the Marans fell foul of Karunanidhi in an intra-family squabble, mainly between Karunanidhi's Madurai-based son M K Azhagiri and the brothers, there has been a marked change in the attitude of the media organisations run by them towards coverage of the AIADMK.

Dayanidhi had explained it as a mere newsroom decision on merits, but the prominence given to the AIADMK in Dinakaran, a daily run by the Marans, has not been lost on the DMK leadership.

Addressing a public meeting near the Theni district collectorate, Jayalalithaa said, "My rule was selfless and I worked for the people's welfare, whereas Karunanidhi's concern is only that of his family."

TN flays Sun TV for delay in providing feed

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government has accused the Marans-run Sun TV network of delay in providing feed to the state-owned Arasu Cable TV Corporation (ACTC) despite the latter “fulfilling all legal obligations.”

“Sun TV is continuing its delaying tactics in giving feed to ACTC,” an official release said here, echoing the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Mr M Karunanidhi's statement early this week that the TV channel owned by his estranged grandnephews, Dayanidhi and K alanidhi Maran, was employing “delaying tactics,” in prodiving feed to ACTC.

“Sun TV is spreading false information that the government officials have sought time to provide information wanted by Sun TV to give the feed” it said.

Despite providing all legal details periodically as required, Sun TV was not providing feed, it said. The state-owned multi-system operator (MSO) would cover the entire state of Tamil Nadu from September 15, the birth anniversary of DMK founder, late C N Annadurai, it said adding areas including Madurai would come under the ACTC ambit and control rooms at Coimbatore and Thanjavur had already been beaming signals in these areas.

The latest episode of the cable war follows Mr Karunanidhi refuting Sun TV's allegations that Royal Cable Vision, owned by his Madurai-based son Mr M K Azhagiri, was blocking ACTC in the temple town.

The RCV, like any other MSO, should cooperate with ACTC, the DMK leader had said early this week.
